Retrenched employees will steal valuable information says Abacus Recruitment

Companies should be very vigilant when firing or retrenching staff because the majority of staff would counter-attack by stealing sensitive or propriety data from the workplace.

This is according to Karen Geldenhuys, MD of ICT recruitment company, Abacus Recruitment. Geldenhuys said the price of “letting staff go” could be quite costly.

According to UK-based on-line publication, wwwContractorUK, nine out of 10 administrators would react by stealing information from their employers.

One-third of the dismissed staff would even go so far as to take the privilege passwords list, giving them access to the most sensitive data. Others would target customer details.

Only 12% of staff interviewed said they would leave without stealing information.

“This is a serious situation for South African companies, because, with the current downturn in the economy, more people are being laid off than is usual. Employers need to be aware of this risk – it could inflict a lot of damage.”
